Scariest thing this Halloween!

It seems like every year I see at least 1 patient the day after Halloween who has some form of eye emergency due to wearing “fashion” or “costume contacts” the night before. Sure, it is a lot of fun to get decked out in full Halloween gear. But please remember:

  • Contact lenses are prescribed specific for each patient based upon custom eye measurements
  • They are NOT “one size fits all”
  • Contacts are NOT over-the-counter merchandise and are regulated by the FDA

Avoid purchasing costume contacts from:

  • Salons or boutiques
  • Halloween costume outlets
  • Flea markets
  • Convenience stores

Wearing costume contacts that have not been prescribed by a licensed Eye Care Professional may result in:

  • Corneal abrasions (“scratch on your eye”)
  • Conjunctivitis (“pink eye”)
  • Corneal ulcers (“yes, it’s as bad as it sounds”)
  • Permanent blindness

My best advice is to avoid these costume contacts altogether. The potential price to be be paid for one night of fun is just too high.
