Ready for Summer?

Summer is here. The temperature is climbing. The water is calling. Summer vacation, anyone? But wait… Not so fast. That sunlight you are about to play under today may have you full of regret tomorrow.

Did you know:

  • Harmful UV rays can lead to cataract formation, macular degeneration, and the development of abnormal tissue growths on the outside of the eye.
  • 90% of skin cancer occurs on the face and neck (5-10% on eyelids).
  • UV damage accounts for 90% of premature skin aging around the eyes.

Unfortunately, even on cloudy days, we are susceptible to sun damage. About 40% of UV exposure occurs when we are not actually in full, direct sunlight. While all eyes are at risk, light-colored eyes are most susceptible. Do you make your children wear sunscreen? About 74% of parents do. However, only 32% make their kids wear UV-protected sunglasses. Just as we take time to make sure they don’t get sunburnt, we should also do our best to make sure their eyes stay healthy!

Here are some tips:

  • Try to avoid or limit time outdoors from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.
  • Check your medications - some may increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV rays and make it easier to get sunburnt (especially antibiotics and acne medications).
  • Wear hats and sunwear while enjoying the great outdoors!

Considerations for choosing your sunwear:

  • Dark colors (gray/green/brown)
    • Great for everyday use!
    • Best in moderate to bright light conditions
    • Gray and green do not distort colors while brown adds contrast
  • Light colors (yellow/gold/amber/rose)
    • Best in moderate to low light conditions
    • Provide for excellent depth perception
    • Enhance contrast to improve visibility of objects, making surroundings brighter
  • Polarized lenses substantially reduce glare
    • a MUST for fishing/boating/water activities!
  • Photochromic/transitions lenses - automatically adjust to changing light conditions
  • Mirrored or flash coating - reduce glare by reflecting the light that hits the lens surface
  • Polycarbonate or Trivex material - impact-resistant to promote eye safety

At Twenty 20, we will help you find the perfect sunwear that will not only protect your eyes and fit your unique needs, but complement your look, too. Then, you will be ready to play!
