Is your smart phone hurting your eyes?

There is a lot of hype in the news lately about “harmful blue light” and how it is affecting us. Many of my patients want to know “What exactly is blue light, and why does it matter?”

Facts about Blue Light:

  • It is emitted by natural sunlight, as well as artificial light

  • LED lights contain 35% blue light

  • By 2020, approximately 90% of all light sources will be LED

  • Most digital devices and “energy efficient” lighting emit blue light (iPhone anyone?)

Why does it matter?

  • A recent study from The Vision Council found that nearly ⅓ of adults spend half their waking hours (9+ hours) using a digital device.

  • 83% of children use an electronic device for 3 or more hours per day

  • Blue-violet light is the 415-455 nm band of light in the visible light spectrum. It is absorbed into the eye and reaches all the way to the retina, making it a risk factor for the development of age-related macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness in adults age 60+.

Is all blue light bad?

  • No! In fact, blue-turquoise light (465-495 nm) plays an essential role in circadian rhythms (sleep/wake cycles), memory skills, and cognitive performance.

The Solution:

  • Filter the blue light - Absorb the good and deflect the bad!

  • At Twenty 20, we use Essilor products because I believe they are the very best in the industry. We have the privilege of being Essilor Experts™ which means we are independent eyecare professionals specially trained in the many benefits of Essilor lenses. Here are 2 crucial things we recommend for filtering blue light and protecting eyes:

  • Essilor’s Smart Blue Filter™ is embedded into every digital lens. This filters the blue light, allowing the beneficial turquoise light through while decreasing the harmful blue-violet light, all in a 100% clear lens. And the best part? It’s free.

  • Crizal® Prevencia™ adds additional protection while giving an E-SPF (or eye-SPF) value of 25, which means it provides 25x more eye protection than going without eyewear. At the same time, it protects against glare, scratches, smudges, dust, and water.

So, is your family getting too much blue light? Yes, it is likely they are. However, there are simple solutions that could protect their precious eyesight for years to come (that don’t involve turning off the laptop!). Come by Twenty 20 - we would love to protect your eyes with our modern blue-light filtering technologies.
